私の老年人生論 by 早川一照 (7 chapters across 3 tapes)

copied onto 3 tapes with summary of each side written in the index

https://www.kyoto-wel.com/item/IS81212N01880.html?device=pc
i found a link for this, but it says 早川一光, why is the last character different?

"Dr. Kazumitsu Hayakawa, a renowned expert in dementia treatment and prevention, shares powerful messages from his extensive clinical experience on how to age wisely and healthily.
How can one overcome the suffering and fear associated with aging, illness, and death to live a fulfilling life?

Dr. Hayakawa, who has witnessed the lives, deaths, and aftermath of many people, will address this question from the perspective of a clinical physician. The book is filled with insights on how to embrace a fulfilling old age."

i understood his tone and a few words here and there — i got the sense that he was saying

here are the facts
we die
there will be fear
here is what we can do now

homemade tape with "ロシア 音樂" written on the tape itself

listened to while organizing and cleaning my bathroom

alla pugacheva mixtape (found out via shazam)

.・゜

i suspect this is made by the same guy who made the circus music tape i listened to a while ago, i continue to wonder about him and his life. the tape cuts off mid-song, i enjoy when there's a good amount of empty tape left at the end, makes the whole experience more spacious

relaxation for surgery
created for the short stay unit
mount sinai

listening while staring at the sky

i want to record this onto my computer somehow
https://drmarciagreenleaf.com/_html/pages/main.php

.・゜

"not any more comfortable than you are ready to feel"
"you needn't bother to figure things out"
"comfortably heavy, or enjoyably light"

"it doesn't matter how or where you're feeling comfort, all that matters is however you feel now, it's just right for how and what you're ready to experience"
"your comfort level, just right for you"

"more control over your own comfort"
"healing swiftly and comfortably, with a clean dry wound"
"... from the relaxation you have achieved"

Commotus
Lucrecia Dalt

listened to side A while stretching, after putting my room into place
listened to side B while taking care of produce and making herb compound butter

experimental/pop/ambient

.・゜

side A — playful, tactile, unrelenting. made me think of the synchronicity, solemnity and silliness of a march

side B — so much variety in an album, more albums should end with an ambient track. from bandcamp "Dalt, who is a civil engineer with a specialty in geotechnics, knows that motion on a geologic time scale can be the most poignant analogy to the interminable struggle between self-awareness and sea change."

just saw that she was in nyc yesterday playing at a secret spot. i bow to the humble experts of the world, occupied with one's inner life and chosen medium, seeping a certain grace unique to those who know a lot about something

10 hole harmonica practice guide by Tombo, a harmonica manufacturing company

listened to right after I composed my resignation email to my manager

.・゜

i remember bringing a harmonica on a long strenuous winter hike in taiwan, playing it and then getting lightheaded. in any case, harmonicas are cute. today i got up and got dressed immediately -- wearing wenjue lu pants, wenjue lu necklace, my signature black tshirt, face and lips moisturized, in childs pose. today is a special day

Silhouette
Seiko Matsuda

listening on a sunny friday morning

jpop/kayōkyoku

woke up wrathful, figured out a mechanical issue with walkman (due to tape detector loosening, it has to be placed on a surface in order to detect a tape. not so walk of my walkman...), turned on the ac, letting my conscience rest, listening to my body

i love the cover photo, her hair is too good... i want a photo of me like that. looked up a performance video. i imagine the way it bounces feels like flapping wings and flying. it must've been so fun to be her in the 80s, i can feel the dopamine and lightness through the movements of her hair

.・゜

side B: songs that make you want to wiggle and chuckle... it's fun to guess which side/song is playing by referencing track title and the sound. fave on this side is the last track, 愛の神話

side A: fave on this side is Sailing

Sleeps
Mashu

listened countless times, this time with cindy and oliver in my room, discussing integrity, words vs action, relationships, security, anthropology, finances, keychain gallery -- possibilities and clarity emerging in plain sight

ambient

wine drunk on cindys favorite orange and chrysanthemum tea. thinking fondly back on the nights working from tokyo and the night mashu made me this tape while i dozed off in his bed. the trip of my life thus far... i loved every moment with you

.・゜

side A - Sleeps: i love setting the scene of a discussion around my tea table with this side of the tape, it feels so true to me, languid yet present, soft yet considered, it has become the sound of my room. i imagine myself listening to this again years later and tearing up with gratitude for these nights in the first space i ever created for myself. thank you for gifting me a sound

side B - Zzz: i never asked what french movie he was recording onto this side, it'd be interesting one day to watch this movie and be so familiar with the sound of the movie without having seen the scenes

So It's Inverted, Occupying The Same Position As Always (14:25 + 14:16)
Anne Guthrie

listening after a morning of talking to mikal and refusing to start work

field recordings

i'm having fun w tape reviews, thank you don. i want to format this page so it's easier to read, but i know you enjoy the plain text. nice to have chosen two tapes that are both sound collage/field recordings, it suits my mental state lately. today i'll journal as i listen

.・゜

side B - Cape Matapalo, February 2011: sounds of the city blending in with the track, friend texting me 11:11

i love my friends a lot a lot. especially m, who takes me by the hand and guides me to the expanse over and over again, who is able to speak in full resolution on all levels of my mind

i noticed in a lot of don's tapes i hear impending doom. i went to a classical indian concert in bedstuy and learned about drone instruments, specifically the tanpura. drones set the baseline for an improv session, an air to return to in case of distraction, an aural lighthouse, a constant yet light-handed invitation to return to the collaborators around you and harmonize yourself with the context

side A - South Street Seaport, February 2012: train tracks, it sounds like the environment is grumpy, whining, wanting attention, unable to change. i like the way these two tracks are named. talked to praagya this morning too, cocoron date next week. this year i've been to taipei, nyc, san juan, sf, osaka, kyoto, tokyo, paris, la, edinburgh. 10 cities. i wonder where else i'll go, and what those places will sound like

TDNWH (45:54)
Sultan Hagavik

listened after coming home from evening walk at prospect park

"sound collage", noise

.・゜

this guy is in wraclow
quotidian horror
noise pollution
the sound of my dissonance and disappointment
art is all about referencing

"the mind is luminous and afflictions flow in
the mind is luminous and afflictions flow out" - buddha

sound collage is a new genre to me, makes me think of jiazhangke. i want to make one myself. these days i have a consistent base reaction to all that i consume -- a compassionate nod at the human condition, and a groundless curiosity for the mind behind the work

Place In The Sun (44:46)
Hiroe Ueda

listened while enjoying chores -- packing for 1.5 weeks in edinburgh, putting away laundry, scrubbing le creuset, tidying closet, moisturizing...

dreamy funky ballady city pop

i love the cover photo
it's getting hard to distinguish the sides bc my walkman has autoreverse

.・゜

10 tracks 10 bangers
as i'm packing for this milestone trip, the one that goes "sayonara, new york city" (夢追いスナイパー) felt synchronous to my life... wondering but not too curious, i let it play out

many scenes came into view as this tape played on
life is light and bright even... especially... amidst yearning and dreaming
i get plenty pto, there are many songs named like "wonderlight" "magical moonlight" "dream chaser sniper"
playful moon
sentimental sunshine
songs that are good for night and day

19.06.2025 11:31

homemade tape with "目黑" written on the spine

listened while looking at work computer

circus music compilation. i wonder which japanese man recorded this and for what purpose, it's thursday, 30c, and i didn't sleep enough -- my imagination is limited and there are some unresolved confusions i have about my life -- all i know is i just listened to some circus music and my walkman ran out of battery when i flipped the tape.

.・゜

intrigued by fresh thoughts that come about through experiencing a new medium and resting in the space between what you put on and what you do while you listen. all the hands that touched this tape of unknown origin unknown purpose unknown orchestra. now i'm thinking about circus, clowns, the limits of the body, the performance of playing, the act of having fun, pure fun, demented fun, peaceful fun

18.06.2025 11:26

The Poems Of William Butler Yeats (1865-1939)

listened while doing sūryanamaskāra a + b

spoken poetry

.・゜

side A: i like that it says "spoken art library for advanced listeners"
listening to poetry while doing yoga is nice
noticing how the subtlest difference in breathing pattern can change everything, related to how yeats proclaims he shall not read poetry like prose
the grandeur of early 1900s intonation... the seriousness of life

propelled me into somewhat of a flow state before i distracted myself with micro chores, and then started adjusting this page to take .txt files instead of manually typing each entry in the html

i write more when i repeat this routine (yoga + yeats)

side B:

13.06.2025 21:38

Canyon Lip (12:11 + 15:07)
Talk West

listened while stretching, with agarwood incense, preparing for a self care saturday mostly alone, grateful beyond comprehension

improv electronic + ambient

listened many times, alone, with friends, in morning, at night. i love this one, especially side A

.・゜

side A - Finally, That River Twists: love this a lot, i like the percussion in the beginning, nutty and natural then the guitar comes in. sounds coming from a mirage

side B - With No Regrets: ominous yet relaxed, like me in samsara. suddenly a siren blares and we recognize it, still relaxed, it's going to be okay in the end, if it's not okay, then it's not the end

10.06.2025 09:38

Tabula Rasa (28:22 + 26:31)
Arvo Pärt

listened while lounging in my room before work. misty, grey skies, windows ajar, eyes dry but face plump
then, listened while lounging after work waiting for friends to come over. fell asleep to the traffic merged with the performance

neo-classical, contemporary, tape distorts at times, gets stuck when ff/rw, might need a new case

.・゜

side A - Fratres/Cactus In Memory of Benjamin Britten/Fratres(Cello): playing with volume
a song meant for loud played quietly
a song meant for one played on a system
arvo part center
complexity reduced via pure skill
a moment for exactly what it is
i am shivering
i am afraid
afflicted
curious
and so on
songs for other sentient beings, specifically insects

side B - Tabula Rasa intense given the name... a blank state is that complicated to reach, need to listen fully again
have a youtube video explaining tintinnabulates open

09.06.2025 21:00

LOST IN TRANSLATION
mixtape by mark

listened while lounging in my room after work

.・゜

side A: down tempo, heady voices, california, college towns, suburban plaza parking lots, songs that sound like sunset

side B: guitars, mark's improv, oscillating volume (makes it feel like a mixtape), realizing the limitations of my dictionary for describing music
coarse to fine ways to identify a song: lyrics, melody, genre, beat, speed, feelings evoked...

07.06.2025 13:09

For Bill Who Will Be 100 In The Year 2062 (25:55)
Tashi Dorji/Bill Orcutt

listened while bleaching brows and getting ready to go out for solo city girl time

unmarked sides, live recording, noise improv

.・゜

the side that starts with a pang: infrastructure, could be score for the dark knight saga, diy, to be all together in one room on one night for sound

the other side: father, integrating with noise, not remembering life and letting it play on
i will be 66 in 2062
